I quote the following "When countries are at war, one country may decide to dump gallons of oil into the other country’s oceans" or "Terrorists may cause an oil spill because they will dump oil into a country’s ocean. Many terrorists will do this because they are trying to get the country’s attention, or they are trying to make a point to a country" so which one is it?, you certainly have the worlds attention.

It took 10,000 workers, 1,000 boats, 100 airplanes, and the Navy, Army, and Air Force to clean up the spill. Exxon spent about $2.1 billion for the clean up.
Unlike the Exxon Valdez tragedy, in which a tanker held a finite capacity of oil, BP's rig is tapped into an underwater oil well and could pump more oil into the ocean indefinitely until the leak is plugged.

Areas of the US Gulf Coast which are also very protected can be expected to experience longer term effects as the oil will not be washed away by waves. Contaminants will settle in the salt marshes and mangrove swamps and food species will continue to be contaminated.
The effects of oil on wildlife have been studied in great detail since the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill more than 20 years ago. Ongoing research in Alaska shows similar results to those in Massachusetts, with more charismatic species such as the killer whale, still being impacted after two decades.
The complexities of marine ecosystems make it difficult to estimate what the level of impact of the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill will be and what species will be most heavily impacted.
